Weber orders Goldie to call Gay to offer to trade Goldie’s life for the diamond. Producer Maurice Geraghty later revealed that RKO executives had recruited Conway simply as a way to induce Sanders to make one more Falcon picture, after which the series would end. The 1940s style of comedy/mystery films has always appealed to me and The Gay Falcon is a nice example.

He reveals that she, her husband Weber and Retana were responsible for the thefts. Oddly though, all are upstaged by the strong performance of Nina Vale who surprisingly only appeared in two other films. Director Irving Reis keeps things moving at an entertaining pace with no time for a wasted scene in the movie's relative short 67 minute runtime.

Overall, it's a solid effort.

1941 B Movie and Spinage Juice

Always enjoyed these old time movies where George Sanders, (Gay Laurence/The Falcon) plays a private detective. Retana enters through her bedroom window, but when he lunges at her, Gay and Waldeck charge in. Very logical screenplay.

One perplexing thing about the move, and it doesn't bother me much: throughout the movie, the Falcon (Sanders) is saying that he loves Elinor Benford (played by Vale) and wants to marry her.

Wendy Barrie is also quick as a whip, lively as a frog jumping on a hot rock, and winsome as a kitten. However, he was referred to as "Watling" and the credits still claimed he was based on a character created by Michael Arlen. If you like George Sanders when he was young, this is the picture for you.

terrific movie, the best of the series

I have seen this movie several times (months ago), and kept it on my DVR, meaning to write a review.

At the party, Elinor becomes annoyed when she realises why Gay changed his mind about attending and retaliates by dancing with Manuel Retana Turhan Bey. In frustration, she grabs the flower from Retana’s lapel and flings it at Gay. He calmly picks it up and attaches it to his lapel. Gladys Jenkins, Edward Brophy, and Arthur Shields should be familiar to any fan of classic B-fare.

Anyone interested in B Movie gems needs to collect this one.

The Falcon Movie Series (1941-1949)

From Wikipedia:

Michael Arlen created Gay Stanhope Falcon in 1940. Moments later, a shot rings out, and she is dead. The plot doesn't really matter, convoluted as it is.

He's got two lovelies, Vale and Barrie, giving him the eye, and maybe more if he'd just slow down a bit. He realizes someone has been there and opens a secret compartment to check if it has been found.

They are puzzled when Retana collapses and dies. Charteris told author David Zinman in 1971, "RKO switched to The Falcon, a flagrant carbon copy of their version of The Saint, in my opinion with the single mercenary motive of saving the payments they had to make to me for the film rights." Charteris actually pokes fun at The Falcon in his 1943 novel The Saint Steps In, with a character making a metafictional reference to the Falcon being "a bargain-basement imitation" of The Saint.)

George Sanders appeared in the first four Falcon features.

Sanders plays along with the fun with such insouciant perfection that he is a marvel of the screen. The comedy elements hit their mark and are, at their worst, amusing. The Webers decided to betray Retana, but he found out.
