We separated and eventually got a divorce. After applying to Newhouse, and then getting in, I couldn’t see myself going anywhere else. I was young, and I'd get killed in that little town. I am very proud of who I am, but I wish I could have enjoyed that aspect of my life earlier had I come out. I felt like I owed her a lot.

I try to be as diligent and hardworking as possible, and it’s really paid off for me.

    Can you go into more detail about some of the awards you’ve received, and what they meant?

    Most recently, I was selected as one of 11 seniors to be named a Whitman Scholar, which is the highest academic recognition awarded by the school. I couldn't come out, didn't have the strength. If I wasn’t willing to learn, I wouldn’t be anywhere near as successful.

    Feeling the pressure from my parents and hers, I eventually asked her to marry. I wanted to make sure she was going to be okay and paid for her therapy and paid all of her debt off. Thinking she was the problem. I visited nine different countries, and to see that corner of the world and be exposed to so many different things was very cool on both a finance and journalism level; it shows how many stories there really are to be told.

    Also, while abroad in Hong Kong, I had a marketing internship in an economic think tank called the Global Institute for Tomorrow. She remarried, had some kids, and is really enjoying life.
